The Full Story
1. It all started with a love of learning and helping others
I’ve always loved academia, particularly during my college years. In high school, I wanted to be a college professor; during college, I enjoyed all the classes and opportunities I could take, even to the point of doing a double major and minor; after college, I worked for several years as an editor and instructional designer for college curriculum before starting my academic coaching business at the beginning of 2018.
Wanting to be a part of helping college students reach their personal and academic goals and potential has been a consistent thread over the past couple of decades.
3. From side gig to unexpected career path
It didn’t take long to realize this was no one-time gig—I had stumbled upon a true vocation. In just one semester, my student went from academic struggle to Dean’s List, and I found that I had a natural gift for helping students in a variety of ways from improving their writing and grades to developing their executive functioning skills such as organization, study skills, time management, etc.
So I updated my years-old tutoring profile, began working with more families, and my business has grown from there through word-of-mouth. It has truly been a privilege to help my students overcome academic obstacles and build confidence in themselves and their ability to succeed in college!
2. The unexpected message that changed everything
When I started working with my first student as an academic coach, I thought it would just be a one-time side gig.
A parent found my tutoring profile online (which I had completely forgotten about creating many years prior) and messaged me regarding the areas in which her college student needed support. It sounded a lot like how I helped my now husband get through his college academics, and I had enjoyed helping him succeed; plus, I was already working as a health coach and had an understanding of effective coaching techniques. So, I said yes, and we began working together right away.
4. My coaching philosophy for college students with ADHD
I believe that ADHD can be a superpower, so I'm passionate about helping college students with ADHD reach their full potential. Sometimes the support and accountability through the coaching partnership is all it takes to help students get on track academically, build their self-confidence, and reach their personal version of success in their college years and beyond.
